Hedwig and the Angry Inch
25th Anniversary
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) follows Hedwig Schmidt (John Cameron Mitchell), a gender-queer East German rock singer who undergoes a failed sex-reassignment surgery to escape communist Berlin with an American soldier, only to be abandoned in Kansas as the Berlin Wall falls. Reinventing herself as a glam-punk performer fronting a band called The Angry Inch, Hedwig recounts her story through electrifying rock performances that explore identity, love, betrayal, and self-acceptance. As she chases fame and the ex-lover who stole her songs, Hedwig confronts the fractured pieces of her past and ultimately embraces wholeness beyond labels, fame, or gender — a timeless story of transformation and authenticity that still resonates a quarter-century later.
