FilmOut gets “Into The Groove” with this stylish 1985 romantic comedy-drama directed by Susan Seidelman. Rosanna Arquette plays Roberta Glass, a suburban New Jersey housewife whose fascination with a personal ad in a newspaper propels her into an unexpected urban adventure. She becomes enamored with Susan Thomas (Madonna), a free-spirited bohemian living in New York. Roberta’s curiosity leads her to follow Susan into the city—wearing Susan’s distinctive tuxedo jacket—which results in a bump to the head, an ensuing bout of amnesia, and being mistaken for Susan herself. As Roberta embraces the mistaken identity, she tumbles into intrigue involving missing earrings, run-ins with a shady figure, and encounters with Susan’s circle of eclectic downtown characters. Set against the backdrop of 1980s New York’s gritty, vibrant East Village, the film pulses with neon-lit thrift stores, underground clubs, and vintage mystique. The cityscape itself becomes a character—alive, edgy, and full of creative energy. Originally released in March 1985, the film not only marked Madonna’s first major screen role, but also launched a wave of dazzling fashion—especially the iconic tuxedo jacket—and captured the era’s indie-feminist spirit with both urgency and whimsy. Now, freshly restored in 4K for its 40th anniversary, the film celebrates the director’s vision with new clarity and every neon shimmer, layered texture, and vintage detail sharper than ever. This restoration has been officially approved by Susan Seidelman and is currently being booked for special screenings throughout 2025.
